EMBRACE - designed in 2007 as a response to a university brief. The brief was to design a modern take on the Isokon Penguin Donkey, that was within 10% of the originals dimensions. The outcome was Embrace, Two bent plywood components that when “embraced” together form a small coffee table with plenty of casual storage and two magazine racks. When the tables are pulled apart they can be used for anything you like; a table and bench for kids, a serving tray for breakfast in bed etc... After various prototypes in the university workshops the first 50 pcs were made by myself, cold pressed in a tiny garage in the centre of York. The next 200 were made in a bent ply factory in the UK, before I moved production to a larger better equipped bent ply factory in the Baltics, where the raw materials used are sustainably felled in the nearby forests. Embrace is available in Birch, Oak and Walnut
This year marks 10 years since “Embrace” went into production and the first unit was sold. I designed embrace back in 2006 when I was a student and after graduation I set about putting it into production. Realising my first product was a steep learning curve for sure, but more than worth it in the end. To date we’ve sold 2172 embraces each one signed and stamped by myself. Those numbers probably don’t sound like much of a big deal to some people, but I’m super proud and thankful for every single one 🙌
